Cristiano Ronaldo sure seems to be on a winning streak when it comes to taking home awards. The Portuguese footballer took home the award for European Player of the Year last night.
As you may remember, Ronaldo is also the recipient of this year’s prestigious Balon d’Or award – beating out the likes of Lionel Messie and Franck Ribery.
The european Player of the Year is a journalists poll where 54 journalists from across Europe get to vote for whomever they feel is the best European player of the year. Ronaldo smashed records in the previous season scoring a record 17 goals in Real Madrid’s Champions League campaign last season and effectively helped his team win their tenth Champions League title.
The award ceremony took place kind of on the fringe of this year’s Champions League draw for the group stages in Monaco.
One must admit that Ronaldo had some stiff competition for this year’s European Player of the Year award. He was up against Germany’s Manuel Neuer and controversial Dutch player, Arjen Robben.
Ronaldo is the fourth player in the award’s history to receive the award. Previous awards went to Lionel Messi, Andres Iniesta and, in 2013, to Franck Ribery of France.
Ronaldo thanked his team mates after winning the award:
“I’ve worked hard for this award, I am very happy, I thank all my team, because without that kind of team individual awards couldn’t exist” he said.
Well done, Ronaldo – you are truly proving to be one of football’s greatest players ever.
